Protein Is Not What We Thought

It is a common mistake that people believe they need more protein in their diet. They think their protein intake always has to be high, especially people who do extreme exercise. The fact of the matter is, that excess protein can cause deficiencies of B6 and B3. It has also been found to leach calcium, zinc and magnesium out of the body. Excess protein creates an overly acidic system because of the build up of waste products such as uric acid, purines and ammonia, causing auto-toxemia. Excess protein also causes unhealthy bacterial growth in the bowel.

In a study of meat eaters and vegetarians it was found that the females in the meat eating group had a measurable bone loss of 35%, in comparison to 7% in the vegetarian group. In the male group meat eating males were found to have a 18% measurable bone loss and vegetarian males had a loss of 3%. Flesh foods are higher in phosphorus compared to plant foods, high phosphorus draws calcium out of the bones. It is also higher in fat which blocks calcium. Poor digestion also can cause low calcium levels. Boron is needed in small amounts for bone metabolism which is important in preventing osteoporosis. Boron is mostly found in plant foods. The best sources of boron are alfalfa powder, hemp, spinach, cabbage, lettuce, apples, leafy greens, snap peas and legumes.

If you are a meat eater, you may want to evaluate how much meat you are consuming in a day. On all holistic diets, people who do eat meat are eating smaller amounts, and from an ethical farm. If you are eating factory farmed meat, which is where most of the meat comes from, the amount of protein will be lower and the chemicals will add more waste products to the body. Whatever your belief system is in terms of where you think your protein has to come from, nobody needs to eat meat three times a day, seven days a week. It is unbalanced and will lead the body into a toxic state.

There are some who feel like they need a high level of protein in their diet. While that may be true because of everyone's metabolism being different, did you know there are concentrated plant sources from which you can get adequate amounts of protein from? This kind of protein comes from Blue-Green Algae

This fresh water algae contains 60% digestible protein, which is higher than red meat because the body can easily assimilate it. Hemp is another good source of digestible protein and contains 37%. Brown Rice Protein is another good source to balance out protein intake.

It is fair to say that we do not need to be eating the excessive and poor sources of protein we are consuming. Amino acids are what make up a protein molecule, these are in all fresh fruits and vegetables. Remember, health is balance.
